BMG equips industry to contain and clean up spills

BMG’s GK-IT emergency spill kits – comprising absorbents, containment materials, cleaning equipment and personal protective equipment in portable bags or wheeled units – enable prompt, efficient response to oil, fuel and chemical spillages. This range covers small vehicle leaks through to substantial spills in workshops, refuelling depots and storage areas.

“A spill can create an immediate workplace hazard and cause environmental damage, with financial consequences for the business. Having the appropriate materials close to the point of use allows containment and clean-up to begin quickly, helping to limit the spread of the spilled material,” explains Celeste Visser, BMG’s Operational Manager, Tools & Equipment division. “GK-IT kits can be tailored to the specific application, with absorbents selected for the substances being handled and equipment matched to the working environment.

“For vehicles and mobile equipment, portable bag kits provide a compact option. The light delivery vehicle kit fits behind a seat or in the boot and contains loose absorbent, five absorbent pads, a containment sock and pillow, together with goggles, nitrile gloves, a PVC apron, dust mask, brush and pan and disposal bags with ties. Larger portable kits accommodate the requirements of trucks and heavy equipment, with additional absorbents and containment materials.”

Wheeled bin kits, which house the emergency kits, are available in 120, 240 and 660 litre sizes for different worksite requirements. The 120 litre unit is suitable for medium-risk areas, including small engineering and manufacturing workshops and for parking areas where mobile equipment may leak. The contents typically include a 5 kg bag of GK Blue absorbent, socks and a pillow, along with cleaning tools, personal protective equipment and disposal bags.

The 240 litre kit is designed for higher-risk locations, like workshops, refuelling areas and garage forecourts. A typical configuration includes 10 kg of the selected absorbent, containment socks and boom, absorbent pillows, 5 litres of degreaser, a telescopic spade and broom. Protective equipment and disposal bags are also included. The wheeled format allows the unit to be easily moved to the spill, bringing the materials and tools together where they are needed.

For storage areas where several product drums are moved simultaneously – for example, in fuel storage facilities and refuelling depots – BMG recommends the 660 litre trolley-bin kit. Typical contents include three 10 kg bags of absorbent, socks, booms and pillows, two sets of cleaning tools and protective equipment, 25 litres of degreaser and 20 disposal bags with ties. These refillable kits can be configured for specific site needs.

Selecting the correct absorbent is an important part of dealing with spills. GK Blue is a heavier oil absorbent manufactured from recycled waste from the sunflower oil industry and can be bioremediated with contaminated soil after use. GK Xtreme is a lightweight loose-fibre absorbent produced from coconut oil industry waste. For strong acids and bases, GK Hazmat – a non-organic mineral absorbent without neutralisation agents – is recommended. Hydrocarbon and chemical absorbent pads and rolls are suitable for applications where dust-free materials are required.

The GK-IT range, which is available through BMG’s distribution network, combines spill-response products with technical expertise to help customers match kits and absorbents to their operations.

Other products in this range include bioremediation products and remediation kits, cleaning and degreasing chemicals, spill decks, drip trays, PVC spill mats and recycling stations, as well as fluorescent tube crushers and bioremediating parts washers.
